Introduction

Pain is familiar to everyone, it strikes all ages. According to the Gallup survey1 *:

  1. Nearly 90% of American adults experience pain at least once a month.
  2. 23% of adults feel pain in the joints almost every day and 18% suffer pain from arthritis.
  3. 43% of American adults say that pain affects their social life.
  4. Only 43% of respondents claim that they can control their pain.
  5. 54% of adults say that they want to be alone when in pain and 50% report that they are feeling down when in pain.
* The Gallup Survey results are based on telephone interviews of 1,002 women and 1,000 men aged 18 & older from May 21 to Jun 9, 1999.
