Understanding Coronary Heart Disease

The heart is a strong and powerful organ. It pumps blood throughout the body, which supplies oxygen and nutrients to all other organs and tissues.

The coronary arteries are the blood vessels around the heart. They are responsible for supplying blood to the heart itself to ensure that the blood circulation and the heart functions normally.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is caused by the narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries. This reduces the smooth flow of blood and, therefore, interferes with the delivery of adequate oxygen supply and nutrients to the heart muscle. In severe cases, this can lead to damage of the heart muscle and even death.
