The World Health Organization estimated that in 2000,
36.1 million people worldwide were living with HIV and
5.3 million of them were newly infected in 2000. This
is more than 50% higher than what WHO's Global Programme
on AIDS projected in 1991 on the basis of the data then
available.2
By the end of 2000, the percentage of HIV-positive
adults who were women was 47%.2
