As a service to the medical and scientific communities,
Merck has published professional handbooks on a non-profit
basis for more than 100 years. The first edition of
The Merck
Manual, which is the most widely used reference
source in the history of medicine, was published in
1899. The Merck Manual Home Edition, a portable home
medical reference, was available in 1997. Other professional
publications produced by Merck include The Merck Index,
The Merck Veterinary Manual and The Merck Manual of
Geriatrics.
